Nigerian Evidence Act 2011
The long title to the new Nigerian Evidence Act 2011 states:
“An Act to repeal the Evidence Act, Cap. E14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, and enact a new Evidence Act which shall apply to all judicial proceedings in or before Courts in Nigeria; and for related matters.”
The Nigerian National Assembly enacted a new Nigerian Evidence Act 2011 to repeal the Nigerian Evidence Act 1945 (Chapter E14 of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004). In addition to the general need for reform of Nigerian law of evidence, it was particularly necessary for it to make provision for a new genre of evidence that is a consequence of breathtaking developments in information and communications technologies – electronic evidence.
