Nigerian Bar Association (NBA): Payment of Annual Practising Fees and Compulsory Branch Registration 2014

 

The Nigerian Bar Association (a non-profit, umbrella professional association of all lawyers admitted to the Bar in Nigeria, engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria) has issued a notice titled, “Payment of Bar Practicing Fees and Compulsory Branch Registration.” It states:

“All Legal Practitioners enrolled at the Supreme Court of Nigeria whether in private, public or corporate practice are required to pay practising fees on a yearly basis, pursuant to Rules 9 (1) – (3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct.”

Banks Designated for Payment of the 2014 Nigerian Bar Association Annual Practising Fees

Payment of 2014 Practising Fees can be made through any of the following banks:

  • Guaranty Trust Bank
  • Access Bank

Period for Payment of the 2014 Nigerian Bar Association Annual Practising Fees

  • Commencement: 1 January 2014
  • Deadline: 31 March 2014

Penalties for not paying the Nigerian Bar Association Annual Practising Fees

The notice states the penalties for non-payment of the Nigerian Bar Association Annual Practising Fees as follows:

  • Forfeiture of every right which a Nigerian Legal Practitioner enjoys in Court, corporate practice or as in-house counsel in any establishment;
  • Loss of other rights and privileges, generally, as a Nigerian Legal Practitioner; and
  • It constitutes a gross act of Professional Misconduct and it will be so treated.

Schedule of 2014 Nigerian Bar Association Annual Practising Fees:

S/No. Category Annual Practising Fee
 1 Senior Advocates of Nigeria and Honourable Benchers N50,000.00 (Fifty thousand naira)
 2 Legal Practitioners of 15 years or more standing post-call N25,000.00 (Twenty-five thousand naira)
 3 Legal Practitioners of 10 years or more standing but less than 15 years post-call N17,500.00 (Seventeen thousand and five hundred naira)
 4 Legal Practitioners of 5 years or more standing but less than 10 years post-call N10,000.00 (Ten thousand naira)
 5 Legal Practitioners of less than 5 years standing post-call N5,000.00 (Five thousand naira)

Payment Instructions

The bank teller to be filled for the purpose of payment of the 2014 Nigerian Bar Association Annual Practising Fees shall contain the following information:

  • Full name of the lawyer (not Initials)
  • Year of the lawyer’s Call to the Nigerian Bar
  • Name of the lawyer on their Certificate of Call to the Nigerian Bar

A copy of the bank teller of each depositor should be forwarded to the appropriate Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association where the lawyer is registered as a Branch Member.

Compulsory Branch Registration of Nigerian Legal Practitioners

According to the notice, “It is imperative to note that Legal Practitioners who have not registered with a branch where he/she practices, works or resides should do so. [See list of NBA Branches and their contact persons on the NBA website – www.nigerianbar.org.ng]”

The notice is signed by Emeka J. P. Obegolu Esq, General Secretary, for the Nigerian Bar Association, and dated 13 February 2014.
